8.5 was a big upgrade, it was released in December 2008, so that is less than 4 years ago.
8.5.2 and 8.5.3 contained (despite the small change in version numbers a large number of improvements as well. Perhaps not enough changes to call it 8.6, but you can't just look at the major version number.
IBM already talked about version 9 and version 10 in teh past, and (according to vowe.net) IBM Notes 9.0 will be released in the beginning of 2013 (as Carl wrote, expect an announcement at Connect 2013).
Yes, the Lotus part of the name will supposedly be dropped, to IBM Notes 9.0. It does not mean Notes is dead. I have heard that since around 1996-97...
How Connect will be compared with Lotusphere will be interesting to see. My guess is that the technical tracks will stay pretty much as they are (perhaps combining AD and BP tracks somewhat, there is sometimes an overlap there), but that the strategies and similar tracks will be rebranded to appeal to the CIO/CEO/CTO type of audience, and that there will be additional sessions/tracks on that side.
